Description

The degree in Applied Biology aims to train professionals with a solid preparation in the various fields of Biology, ranging from genes (from molecular biology to population genetics) and cells (in their structural and functional components), and from organisms (in their diversity, physiology and evolution) to communities and ecosystems. The training provided, eclectic and modern, uses a dynamic teaching/learning methodology, strongly supported by an experimental component and which stimulates critical thinking, independent and cooperative work. The course is organized in 6 semesters of 30 ECTS, and 180 ECTS are required to obtain the degree. The first 5 semesters consist of 5 UC of 6 ECTS, all with a practical component (PL) with the exception of the UC taught by the Department of Mathematics. In the last semester, students have the opportunity to choose from three optional modules (5 ECTS), one in the specific area of Biology, the second also extending to related areas of the School of Sciences, and a third in any scientific area. They also have the possibility to develop a research project in a UC called Project in Applied Biology with 15 ECTS.
This basic multidisciplinary training acquired by graduates in Applied Biology will also allow access to a wide variety of second cycle courses where they can acquire more specific and advanced complementary training.

Key learning outcomes

1. To train professionals with a solid scientific and technical preparation in the various fields of Biology;
2. To provide students with a general background in different areas of fundamental sciences relevant for the study of Biology, but also preparing for the challenges of contemporaneity;
3. To provide conditions for students to acquire laboratory, field work and computational skills, quantitative and critical thinking, essential for a biologist;
4. To ensure the acquisition of transversal skills that enhance the ability to work as a team, interdisciplinarity and the ability to communicate with other scientific and professional areas and to different public;
5. To confer technical and scientific abilities enabling the access to a wide range of post-graduation courses (including MSc);
6. To pass on values and fundamental principles for the formation of free, participative, competent, responsible and critical-minded citizens.

Access to higher education

This course provides the technical-scientific capacity to access degree-granting courses in the next cycle (Master's), or other postgraduate courses that do not award a degree.

Careers

At the end of this Degree, the skills acquired will constitute the basis of the unique and irreplaceable underpinnings for accessing various professional activities in the field of biological sciences, namely in the sectors of health, environment, industry (biotechnology, agri-food, pharmaceutical), and agriculture, being able to perform scientific research and development, technical, analytical (chemical, biological) and quality control functions, management and conservation of living resources, biodiversity and ecosystems, consultancy and advice, but also in business creation and the teaching of Biology. The Degree in Applied Biology is recognized by the Order of Biologists (see more in Artigo 61.º Profissão de biólogo, dos Estatutos da Ordem, Lei n.º 159/2015 de 18 de setembro).
