Description

The degree course in Applied Statistics is developed over 3 academic years (total of 180 ECTS). The first year is oriented to the learning of mathematical concepts, fundamentals of probability theory and concepts in the area of economics/financial mathematics. Awareness raising for the area of statistics is done through the CU of Statistical Laboratories (I and II) with the use of computational and programming tools. In the second year there is a consolidation of mathematical concepts, advancing to several applied areas of Statistics. Students complement their training with concepts of Operational Research and Computing. In the third year, training in statistical modelling with more specific CU prevails, such as large data processing. The classes of the course take place mostly in a computational laboratory context. The last semester is predominantly dedicated to an internship or project, creating the conditions for the student to be easily integrated into the job market. Also in the last semester there is a CU of general character: Opção UMinho. This course allows the acquisition of a wide range of skills and competences, namely in mathematics, statistics, operational research and information systems, analytical skills, problem solving skills, data science skills, autonomous learning ability and ability to integrate multidisciplinary teams.

Key learning outcomes

1. Develop capacity to formulate, model and solve problems of diverse and changing areas;
2. Stimulate the interest, knowledge and flexibility to study and develop applications;
3. Develop capacity for abstraction, logical reasoning and identification of the structures underlying various situations;
4. Develop specific knowledge of the appropriate tools to formulate and solve problems;
5. Develop the ability to apply analytical reasoning, to deal with complexity, to deal with concepts, to implement models, to formulate and solve problems;
6. Stimulate the critical spirit, essential for deciding on appropriate ways to read information and interpret results of studies carried out and communicate them to different audiences (specialists or not).

Access to higher education

This course confers the technical-scientific capacity to access second cycle courses in several areas such as Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Operational Research, Economics and Management, as well as several Engineering areas, given the transversality of the basic training of this degree.

Careers

The Degree in Applied Statistics aims to train professionals who can work in organizations in different areas such as hospitals, pharmaceutical laboratories, consultancies, banks and insurance companies, the media, government entities and local authorities, universities, industry.
