How to apply

​Applications are made online at the Acad​emic Portal. Candidates should provide the following documents in on​e of the foll​owing languages - Portuguese, English, Spanish, or French:  

• Research Plan;
• Statement of acceptance of the internal advisor;
• Statement of acceptance of the external advisor (if applicable);
• Digital copy of transcript of records for your graduation degree and master (stating in details all courses taken and grades obtained as well as a general grading scale and average necessary grade). Add a translation if applicable;
• Curriculum Vitae;
• Digital copy of the English language proficiency certificate (except for citizens of Portuguese speaking countries);
• Other documents relevant for the application (optional).

NOTE: Before send the application, please contact the Programme Director if you need support to write the research plan or to select the internal advisor.

The documents submitted in the application is a responsibility of the candidate, who must submit the originals of documents whenever requested. In case of doubt about the elements relevant to the application or their authenticity, UMinho may request additional information from the applicant or their confirmation. ​

The possession of foreign qualifications must be proven by means of a document authenticated by the official education authorities of the country of origin and recognized by a Portuguese diplomatic or consular authority, either by means of a Hague Convention Apostille or through a declaration issued by NARIC.

Results: September 1-15, 2026
Registration and enrolment: September 23-30, 2025

2nd phase (if there are any vacancies left over from the previous phase)
Applications: July 1 - October 31, 2026
Results: December 2-15, 2026
Registration and enrolment: December 21-30, 2026

3rd phase (if there are vacancies left over from the previous phase)
Applications: November 1, 2026 - January 31, 2027
Results: March 1-12, 2027
Registration and enrolment: March 24-31, 2027

4th phase (if there are vacancies left over from the previous phase)
Applications: February 1 - April 30, 2027
Results: June 1-15, 2027
Registration and enrolment: June 23-30, 2027
