Doctoral Program ​in Chemistry

The Doctoral Program in Chemistry (PDQ) aims to prepare students with a solid foundation in Chemistry particularly in the areas of Organic and Biological Chemistry and of Analytical Chemistry. 

The structure of the PDQ includes a curricular component (60 ECTS) followed by the development of a Research Project on themes of Fundamental and / or Applied Chemistry. This project, to be developed in academic and / or professional context, should contribute significantly to scientific and technological advances. 

The training is provided by teachers / researchers of the Chemistry Research Center in collaboration with national and international partners of recognized institution.

Description


The course aims to train PhDs with a broad multidisciplinary foundation in Chemistry, providing tools for:
- Creating knowledge in Chemistry;
- Solving scientific and technological problems integrated in the field of Chemistry;
- Designing, planning, and executing multidisciplinary research plans;
- Leading, communicating, and managing projects and/or human resources.

Key learning outcomes


1. Promote a broad, advanced, and multidisciplinary view of current research in Chemistry;
2. Provide a stimulating scientific environment in research projects that facilitates learning, discussion, and the creation of new ideas;
3. Develop research skills, strategies, and methodologies in multidisciplinary areas of Chemistry;
4. Provide training in research areas that result in relevant contributions in the field of Chemistry;
5. Provide the possibility for PhDs to be inserted in scientific and technological companies, continue their research career, or create their own companies;
6. Provide multidisciplinary training that enables PhDs to intervene in academic, professional, technological, social, or cultural fields.

Access to higher education


This course confers technical-scientific capacity for access to postdoctoral courses.

The multidisciplinary training and scientific, technical, and interpersonal skills enable PhDs to:
- Pursue a career in scientific research in Chemistry;
- Pursue a career in technology-based industries in the field of Chemistry;
- Create technology-based companies in Chemistry, with great potential for innovation and added value;
- Lead multidisciplinary teams in an academic and/or business context.

Formal requirements


Candidates should fulfill the following conditions:
a) holders of a master degree in Chemistry or related subject, or a legal equivalent to a master degree;
b) holders of a master degree in a scientific area considered relevant by the Scientific Council of the School of Sciences;
b) holders of a foreign higher degree, in Chemistry or a related area, corresponding to a 2nd cycle of studies recognized as fulfilling the objectives of the master degree by the Scientific Council of the School of Sciences;
c) holders of a degree in chemistry or related area with an academic or scientific curriculum that is recognized by the Scientific Council of the School of Sciences as demonstrating the competence of the candidate to carry out the PhD program;
d) holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the Scientific Council of the School of Sciences as demonstrating the capability of the candidate to complete this course.
