Doctoral Program in Marine Science, Technology and Management​

This programme, offered by the universities of Aveiro, Minho, Porto and Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, has a duration of three years and four branches of specialisation: i) Ocean Observation and Global Change; ii) Sustainable Use of Marine Resources; iii) Integrated Management of the Sea; and iv) Technological Progress, Engineering and Business Management. Applications must be made directly at the university where the candidate wants to develop the programme.

The programme aims to foster international collaboration in research on marine sciences and, for this reason, is part of the Do*Mar international doctoral programme, which brings together the universities of Vigo, Santiago de Compostela and Coruña, the Spanish Institute of Oceanography and the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, together with the four Portuguese universities.

The Doctors from the Doctoral Programme in Science, Technology and Management of the Sea will receive the respective joint diploma signed by the four Portuguese universities and a diploma from the Do*Mar Programme, signed by all the Portuguese and Spanish partner institutions.

The conclusion of this Doctoral degree allows the realization of research activity at post-doctoral level.

Formal requirements


The conditions established in the national legislation. In particular, at least one of the following criteria have to be fulfilled:
- To hold a Master degree or legal equivalent, in Marine Science, Technology and Management or Aquatic Biological Resources or Marine Sciences - Marine Resources, or other related areas in Engineering or Science.
- To hold an undergraduate degree from a national or foreign university, that is recognised as appropriate by the Academic Commission of Do*Mar.
- To hold a professional or scientific curriculum that is considered relevant and appropriate by the Academic Commission of Do*Mar.
Additionally, the candidates must have a B1 level of proficiency in spoken and written English.
