Description

In modern human societies, plants constitute an increasingly valued resource. The huge advance in genome sequence of plant species associated with the implementation of bioinformatics tools, the progress in the analysis of gene expression and their protein products, knowledge of the regulation of metabolic pathways, and new methodologies for obtaining genetically modified organisms has revolutionized biotechnology.

The socio-economic importance of plants comes because, not only are the basis of feeding a growing world population, but also because they provide a wide range of products and applications in numerous sectors of economic activity as the agro-food industry (e.g. plant breeding, production of aromatic and medicinal plants, forest production), life sciences (e.g., therapies based on products of plant origin), industry (e.g. textiles, pulp, furniture, renewable energy), environmental protection (e.g. phytoremediation) and services (e.g. DNA and protein sequencing, DNA chips).

The Master Course in Plant Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Bioentrepreneurship is aimed at postgraduate qualification of human resources in the fields of biochemistry, molecular and functional biology, biotechnology and phytochemistry, complemented with skills in the areas of entrepreneurship, in order to enable them to carry out projects of I&D with strong component of innovation, enhancing their connection to the business sector.

Access to higher education

Given the scope of MP3B masters course, there will be a vertical articulation with various courses of 1st cycle (e.g. Biology-Geology, in Biochemistry, and in Environmental Sciences) and 3th cycle (Plant Biology Doctoral Program (a MAP program) or in the Molecular and Environmental Biology Doctoral Program (UM), as well as in other UM national and international doctoral programs), in the areas of Biosciences and Biotechnology.

Careers

This course takes into account the needs of the market, in what concerns the growing need for plant resources in several key sectors (agrofood; industrial). Highly specialized technical training in plant molecular biology and biotechnology will be given, suitable for the creation of new varieties/products/services with added value.
