Fungi, climate change and human health: bringing research perspectives together
On 8 October, more than 50 researchers and healthcare professionals from Portugal and Belgium will meet at the University of Minho for the GastroFungi Scientific Meeting – Advances in Fungal Research. The speakers are Rosana Alves, Patrick van Dijck, Joana Rocha, Ana Cláudia Carvalho, Rui M. Reis, Clarisse Nobre and Greetje Vande Velde.
Organised by Rosana Alves, researcher at the Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology (CBMA), the meeting will bring together researchers from the University of Minho across biology, engineering and medicine, alongside clinical perspectives and international contributions from KU Leuven.
The programme will explore how environmental fungi adapt to human hosts, the molecular mechanisms underlying fungal emergence, interactions between fungi and other microorganisms, and the growing challenge of antifungal resistance for the diagnosis and treatment of infections. Beyond individual research areas, the meeting aims to create bridges between fundamental research and clinical practice and to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration.
The GastroFungi Scientific Meeting is organised within the GastroFungi project, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). It also reflects a broader challenge for research: understanding how environmental change and increasing anthropogenic pressure can affect the relationships between ecosystems, microorganisms and human health.
